ALBANY, N.Y. (NEWS10) — New York State Police have launched a new initiative to expand their animal cruelty investigation capabilities, the agency announced on Friday. The specialized training will reportedly be led in partnership with the New York State Animal Protection Federation (NYSAPF).

According to State Police, more than 200 troopers and investigators will receive advanced instruction from NYSAPF’s Division of Humane Law Enforcement on how to identify and respond to animal cruelty cases. The agency said the training will “strengthen investigative capabilities and support comprehensive, compassionate responses to these offenses.”

“Animal cruelty is not only deeply troubling on its own, but it is often connected to other serious crimes,” said superintendent Steven James, citing an article by the FBI Behavioral Analysis Unit that has drawn a link between animal cruelty and human violence. “This training will help ensure our members have the tools and awareness they need to recognize and investigate these cases effectively. By strengthening our response, we’re standing up for the welfare of animals and the safety of our communities.”

In addition to improving response, the initiative will reportedly enhance State Police’s collaboration with local law enforcement, animal welfare organizations and prosecutors. The efforts will build upon existing animal cruelty training programs, the agency noted.

“Ensuring that law enforcement can properly recognize and respond to animal cruelty is essential to protecting our human companions, said NYSAPF Executive Director Libby Post. “Together, we’re building a stronger foundation for humane enforcement across New York.”
