LOUDONVILLE, N.Y. (NEWS10) – A group of students at St. Pius X are learning how to wield a bow and arrow in a new archery program. Their educators are hopeful that the lessons taught during practice can be applied when shooting for their dreams.

“I don’t know too many famous archers but I know that I do look up to my teammates, and I definitely look up to Mr. Smith and I just like shooting, so it’s really fun for me,” said a 5th grade student.

Jim Smith, their coach, was asked to start the club at the school after his daughter, a skilled archer, graduated. There are now 20 students in the program.

One of his archers, 13-year-old Natasha, has placed at multiple archery competitions at the state and national level.

“It’s not like other sports where you hear the squeak of the thing or people yelling. It’s just the peace and quiet and you get to focus on the sport itself, but you still get exercise out of,” said Natasha.
