ALBANY, N.Y. (NEWS10) — New York’s immigration policies took center stage in Washington as a panel of lawmakers questioned Governor Hochul and two other democratic governors over the state’s sanctuary city policies.
This week on Empire State Weekly, Morgan Hook, a partner at Bluejacket Strategies, discussed Gov. Hochul, who faced questions from a congressional panel and North Country congresswoman Elise Stefanik on Thursday, who is openly considering a run for governor in 2026. He speculated the testimony may have a negative impact on Stefanik’s gubernatorial prospects.
“The whole thing was again, sort of politics at its worst, when that is supposed to be a government building not a political building,” Hook said. “And I just think that the overall impression that most people are going to take away from that I would think is just kind of like, ‘this is gross and I want nothing to do with it.”
Also this week, the medical aid in dying act made its way to the governor’s desk after it passed both houses in the legislature. The legislation establishes a framework that would allow patients with terminal illnesses to request medication to end their own lives. Assemblymember Amy Paulin, a Democrat who represents the 88th District, explained the support the controversial legislation had ahead of its passage.
“We hadn’t seen a lot of opposition by the time we passed it this year,” Paulin said. “We had support from the Medical Society of the State of New York, the New York State Bar, to the New York State Psychiatrist Psychiatric Association, we we had a tremendous amount of institutional support for this, and clearly New Yorkers want this. When it’s polled, around 70 percent of New Yorkers want this.”
