ALBANY, N.Y. (NEWS10) — March 14 is celebrated as National Pi (π) Day, in honor of the mathematical constant and famous irrational number beginning with 3.14. To commemorate, Instacart recently released the results of a survey determining the favorite pie of each state in the country, based on consumer data.
The report showed that the most popular pie among New Yorkers is apple pie. While perhaps not a surprise for the state whose official fruit is apple, the survey differs from a 2024 study by Mixbook that dubbed grape pie, a Finger Lakes region delicacy, as New York’s favorite.
Instacart’s report calculated each state’s preferred pie by comparing in-state sales of pie varieties to how they sold nationally. While pumpkin pie was shown to be the favorite pie of 14 individual states, New York’s favorite pie mirrored the heart of the country, with apple being the number one selling pie nationally, followed by pumpkin and pecan respectively.
The survey revealed that the least commonly sold pies nationwide were raspberry pie and vanilla cream pie, representing only 0.02% of pies sold. The report also found that New Yorkers are slightly less likely to make pies from scratch than the average American, with data showing that New Yorkers purchased ingredients like pie crusts and fillings about 9% less than the national average.
