ALBANY, N.Y. (NEWS10) — April 20, or 4/20, has become known as a sort of holiday for marijuana users. With this day approaching, law enforcement in New York is reminding everyone that driving under the influence of drugs and alcohol, including cannabis, is illegal and dangerous.

The New York State Police is upping patrols and targeting drug-impaired driving during its enforcement and prevention campaign for 4/20. The efforts will go from Friday, April 18 to Sunday, April 20.

This statewide initiative is funded by the Governor’s Traffic Safety Committee. The goal is to stop people from getting behind the wheel while under the influence of alcohol or any kind of drug.

New York State Police Superintendent Steven G. James said, “Drug-impaired driving has become an increasing threat on our nation’s roads. Unfortunately, too few people recognize the dangers of operating a motor vehicle while under the influence of marijuana. The New York State Police reminds drivers that the dangers of driving under the influence of any substance are preventable. I thank our partners at the Department of Motor Vehicles for their shared devotion to always keeping New York’s roads safe.”
