ALBANY, N.Y. (NEWS10) — Criticism is growing over proposed changes to social security. U.S. Sen. Kirsten Gillibrand said the changes could result in some retirees going back to work.

The Trump administration said it will be closing 47 field offices in 18 states, including New York. They said it’s part of an effort to cut spending.

Gillibrand, however, said the office closures could make it easier for scammers to prey on seniors for their benefits. The democrat said the cuts could backfire on republican lawmakers.

“I don’t think they’ve fully absorbed the impact,” she said. “And I do think what’s going to happen over time, as these harms continue to affect every type of citizen in this country, they’re going to start calling their representatives.”

Despite the criticism, the Department of Government Efficiency claims it has saved an estimated $130 billion. Roughly 72.5 million people, including retirees and children, receive Social Security benefits.
