CATSKILL, N.Y. (NEWS10) -Village government has been trying to upgrade Catskill’s water systems for more than five years. After receiving grants from State and Federal partners, it’s finally time to rip up the ground.
“We are moving forward with a $25 million sewer project. This project will enhance our wastewater and stormwater systems, significantly reduce pollution and ensuring reliable services for our residents,” stated Joe Kozlowski, Catskill Board Vice President.
At Thursday’s press conference, officials said this will protect the Hudson River. Four combined sewer overflows, which send wastewater to treatment plants according to the EPA, will eventually be phased out. When these systems are overloaded, untreated waste runs into nearby bodies of water.
“These are major wins for public health, the environment and everyone who depends on the Hudson. These impacts don’t stop at the river’s edge,” added Maureen Coleman, State Environmental Facilities Corporation CEO.
Another $5 million will create a new settling pond and replace the 100 year old water main. Last October, NEWS10’s Anthony Krolikowski reported at least 133 lines were made of lead. 20 more were found on Main Street.
“We’re still checking residents and buildings to see what kind of lead lines we have and then when we get to them, they’ll have to all be replaced,” explained Kozlowski.
While construction continues, residents can expect some road closures. Work is expected to last through next spring. Meanwhile, South Cairo will connect to the Village’s water supply from Potic Mountain with construction starting in August. These separate projects will not impact each other.
