ALBANY, N.Y. (NEWS10)– According to the Kampgrounds of America (KOA) camping trends are on the rise. In 2024, KOA reported over 11 million new households went camping compared to 2019.
In New York State, many New York State regulated campgrounds and day use areas open for the season on May 16. As families prepare and plan for camping trips, here are some things you should know according to the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation.

Back Country Camping is available on most lands managed by the DEC, including Forest Preserve lands and State Forests. There are also many private and glamping campsites available throughout the state too.
According to the KOA, new campers, generally younger, however, are looking to camp in private campgrounds or glamping resorts compared to state land. In New York State, the KOA has 20 campgrounds for a more private setting.
According to Travel and Leisure, resort sites like AutoCamp Catskills in Saugerties, Gather Greene in Coxsackie, Camptown in Leeds, Glampful in Broadalbin, A Tiny House Resort in South Cairo, and Huttopia Adirondacks in Lake Luzerne were named some of the best glamping spots in the state.
