ALBANY, N.Y. (WTEN) — The budget for the 2026 fiscal year was delayed by over 25 days, with lawmakers passing several extenders to keep the government running. The negotiations were longer than last year due to certain policy items included in the budget.
This week on Empire State Weekly, Blair Horner, a senior policy advisor for the New York Public Interest Research Group (NYPIRG), explained the budget would likely be passed sooner if specific policy items were not included. However, he said that the governor acted within her powers to include those items in the budget.
Also this week, Cianna Freeman-Tolbert, an immigration law expert with Osterman, Whiteman and Hanna, explained how federal immigration policy continues to impact many across New York. She stated that she urges her clients to not attend protests in order to avoid interactions with law enforcement that could jeopardize their immigration status.
