ALBANY, N.Y. (NEWS10) — It’s National School Breakfast Week, and Albany schools are highlighting the role the meal plays in student success.
The City School District of Albany and the American Dairy Association North East were joined by anti-hunger organizations to showcase the different meal programs available to students. Officials said they play a vital role in supporting students’ academic success.
“I have seen the effects of food insecurity, and it is not good. Who can concentrate when they are hungry? Who can problem solve when they haven’t had a decent meal?” Giffen Memorial Elementary School Principal Nicole Newman said. “When I eat breakfast, I feel ready to learn, play, and be my best self. That’s why breakfast at school isn’t just food; its fuel to help us all have a great day.”
As part of her new budget proposal, Gov. Kathy Hochul has proposed universal meals for all New York students, expanding free meals to 300,000 additional school children.
