Los Angeles County District Attorney Nathan Hochman provided an update on the notorious Menendez brothers murder case on Monday morning.
The update discussed of Hochman’s “three parallel tracks” he has for the case, which include the habeas petition filed by Lyle and Erik Menendez, the clemency plea with California Gov. Gavin Newsom and the brothers’ resentencing request.
The latter is what was discussed Monday morning.
The DA’s Office has already informally requested that the courts deny the habeas petition, but Newsom recently directed the California Board of Parole Hearings to evaluate whether Lyle and Erik, who are now 57 and 54, respectively, pose a risk to public safety if they were to be released from prison.
Hochman has previously stated that he opposes a new trial for the brothers, who are serving life sentences for the murders of their parents, Jose and Kitty, at their Beverly Hills home in 1989. The pair were 21 and 18 at the time of the killings.
At Monday’s press conference, Hochman indicated that he was in favor of granting the brothers a resentencing hearing, but on his terms.
“The District Attorney’s Office is prepared to proceed forward with the hearing on the Court’s initiation of resentencing proceedings for the Menendez brothers but we are requesting that the prior District Attorney’s motion for resentencing be withdrawn,” he said.
Their resentencing hearing will proceed on March 20 and 21.
The brothers’ case has received new attention in recent times due to several factors, including a popular Netflix series, “Monsters: The Lyle and Erik Menendez Story,” new evidence, including a letter written by Erik alleging abuse by Jose Menendez, and former L.A. County DA George Gascón publicly supporting the brothers’ request for clemency.
