ALBANY, N.Y. (NEWS10) — It’s that time of year again: when perspective students start applying to colleges and universities, and when college students submit federal financial aid applications for next year.

This week on Empire State Weekly, we sit down with SUNY Chancellor John King Jr. as he details the ins and outs of how to properly apply to colleges and federal financial aid. He also assures students and families that while the federal government is currently in a shutdown, financial aid is still available.

“It’s important that students and families know that FAFSA, the Free Application For Free Student Aid, is still working during the shutdown,” King said. “And FAFSA really is the gateway to state aid and institutional aid, and folks should not put this off. They should do it now. About 52% of SUNY students go tuition free because of federal and state financial aid.”

Also this week, one of the most watched elections of the year, the mayor race in New York City, is entering it’s final lap, and all three candidates aren’t slowing down. Henry Rosoff, WPIX-TV’s senior political reporter, breaks down the final debate and everything that Mamdani, Cuomo, and Sliwa need to do in order to cross the finish line.

To see more from these interviews, here is a list of where and when you can watch Empire State Weekly in your area of New York:
